Join EBSAT to hear about the work of Cecilia Sanchez-Garduño and the Maya Nut Institution where Indigenous women beat macho stereotypes to sell their products and help the Earth.

Cecilia will talk about the tradition of farming and consuming a nutritional, delicious, medicinal, and culinary versatile seed through a visionary approach.  The Maya Nut program has been running for 18 years.  The program has Indigenous women as the primary beneficiaries.  It takes this approach because they are a critical link between the health of the family and the environment.  Cecilia will explain how women of 13 States in Mexico have taken decisions in an adventurous, hard, and fun work that goes from beating macho stereotypes to selling their Maya Nut products at the Galsgow Conference of the Parties (COP).

Cecilia obtained her Ph.D. in Ecology from Imperial College, UK studying the tropical tree species Brosimum alicastrum (Ramon, Maya Nut).   Since then, she has worked for the sustainable value of the Maya Nut for food, fodder, ecosystem services, and income.   As part of the international yet small team of the Maya Nut Institute, Cecila implements grassroots and research projects on the mentioned species through building national and international alliances with over 20 government, academic, and civil organizations.   Cecilia has formed a horizontal team with indigenous women with whom her group produces measurable impacts in health, food security, forest protection, recovery of indigenous knowledge, and income generation in rural families.

Her family includes her husband Chris, and her 19-year-old son, Alex.  Both are an active part in the promotion and field trips of this program. Cecilia works pro bono.   Cecilia and her family live in Cuernavaca where she gets involved in other environmental programs.
